Palm Sunday & Passion Week
Church Family,Â
We are approaching the final stretch of Lent as this Sunday recognizes the entrance Jesus made into Jerusalem and the beginning of Passion Week. After we celebrate Palm Sunday, we will be remembering the last meal Jesus had before his arrest on Holy Thursday and then the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday. Both the last supper and the crucifixion will be remembered with a Maundy Thursday Service on March 28th and a Good Friday Tenebrae Service on March 29th. Both services are at 7:30 pm.Â
The Tenebrae Service is a Service of Shadows that focuses on the last three days of Christ's life. As we sit and reflect in an ever-darkening sanctuary, we will hear the disciples promising never to abandon Jesus, Pontius Pilate asking the crowd which prisoner should be released, and Jesus' last words on the cross. I am excited that professional actor, Ryan McCurdy, will be the voice of Jesus in the service. Ryan is an Asburian who splits his time living in New York and Savannah. I'm glad it worked out for him to be in Savannah to fill this important role. We hope you will invite family members and friends and other acquaintances to experience this special service. I, however, do not recommend it for young children as the sanctuary will be very dark and the subject matter serious.Â
The services on Thursday and Friday are going to be great experiences. But before Thursday and Friday, we need to journey to Jerusalem on Sunday. I hope you will join us in the courtyard prior to the service to receive a palm branch and a bulletin. We'll offer the Call to Worship in the courtyard and then process into the sanctuary together as we sing the opening hymn.
Wesley Oak's Holy Week Services
Wesley Oak (our sister church in Thunderbolt) will be celebrating Palm Sunday this week at their 9:30 a.m. Service.Â
Wesley Oak will also be offering a Good Friday Service on March 29th. The time of the Good Friday Service will be 12 Noon.Â
Easter Egg HuntÂ
We'll be having an Easter Egg Hunt at our Wesley Oak campus next Saturday, March 30th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 Noon. All children are welcomed, so spread the news!Â
WHO ARE YOU INVITING TO HOLY WEEK SERVICES & EASTER?
We all need hope. The message of Easter is a message of hope — love conquered hate, light vanquished the darkness, and life defeated death as Christ rose from the grave. Help someone experience hope by inviting them to church for our Holy Week services, and especially for Easter.Â
I look forward to seeing everyone on Palm Sunday. I'll be meeting those of you worshipping with us in person in the church courtyard so we can process in together on the opening hymn. We'll see those of you who are part of our Online Community when we get inside the sanctuary.Â
It's going to be a great Sunday and a fantastic service as we continue our prayers and actions to help "Roll Down, Justice!"
Love,
Billy
