FLOWERS FOR THE SERVICE:
The flowers for the service were given in memory of Jack & Ruby Davenport.

SPECIAL THANKS:
Every Sunday at Asbury, there are people who work behind the scenes to help make the day so meaningful and wonderful for us and our visitors. We thank those unsung heroes of faith — our Hospitality Team, our Ushers and Greeters, our Nursery Workers, and our Children's Church Teachers.

SERMON: "Tough Decisions"
The Rev. Billy Hester bases his sermon on verses from Proverbs. After an amusing anecdote from his honeymoon, he suggests that we should make decisions based on God's WORD, which is not necessarily the same as the "words" in the Bible—don't ignore the context in which the Bible was written. He cites the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ (the "red-letter" words of some Bibles) as our moral guide.
Scripture:
Proverbs 3:1-6 [NIV Translation; others available at the link]

SPECIAL PRAYER: "The Jesus Prayer"
At the end of his sermon, Rev. Billy introduces "The Jesus Prayer" and encourages the congregation to use the prayer over and over as a chant, with the goal of trusting God more and more. The Jesus Prayer dates back to at least the 5th century, but it may even date back to the origin of the church. There a variations of it, but it's essence is the same: expressing our dependence on God and asking God for help. Billy encouraged us to offer this simple prayer many times each day—like breathing in and breathing out—so that we can let go of our anxieties and build our trust in God:

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.
Make haste to help me.
Do your will in my life.
