BULLETIN for the SERVICE

FLOWERS FOR THE SERVICE:
The flowers for the service were given in memory of Lillian H. Lindsay by Marie Winters and the George Lindsay family. Flowers are also given in memory of Louise Wiley by her family.

SPECIAL THANKS:
Every Sunday at Asbury, there are people who work behind the scenes to help make the day so meaningful and wonderful for us and our visitors. We thank those unsung heroes of faith — our Hospitality Team, our Ushers and Greeters, our Nursery Workers, and our Children's Church Teachers.

ANTHEM: "Welcome to the House of the Lord"
Asbury Memorial Choir

Written by: Mark Miller
Director: Ray Ellis
Piano: Kay Deffley; Assisted by: Randy Canady
In 2009, the Asbury Choir commissioned composer Mark Miller to write a song for the 100th birthday of Asbury Memorial UMC.  The result was "Welcome to the House of the Lord," which has  become one of our favorite anthems.

RIBBONS FOR A REASON
Rev. Jeanette Purvis announced that Asbury had added three more orange ribbons to the courtyard fence to commemorate the deaths by gun violence of Raymond Williams, age 46, who died on July 26, 2016, Troy Antwan Black, age 35, who died on Septermber 3, 2016, and Carey Moss, age 52, who died on September 5, 2016.

SERMON: "The Church of Holy Fools"
The Rev. Billy Hester bases his sermon on verses from I Corinthians. He asks the question; "Why do we do the things we do?" We are to be "fools for Christ." Those who follow the ways of Christ should be called "holy fools or angelic trouble makers." In his sermon, he also explains Asbury's logo, the clown doll, and how it relates to the concept of Christians being "holy fools."
Scripture:
I Corinthians 1:18-25 [NIV Translation; others available at the link]
