3rd Sunday in Lent - The Inaugural Online Service during the COVID-19 Pandemic
A Special Message from Rev. Billy Hester on March 13, 2020

Asbury Memorial Church will be suspending all church activities until further notice.
This crisis is an opportunity for us to be "little Christs".

The bishop of the North Georgia Conference has asked United Methodist churches to suspend worship services through March due to COVID-19. Our bishop has asked us to use our discretion about canceling services after talking with health professionals in our area. The health professionals I have spoken with strongly encourage us to suspend all church activities. Our hospitals do not have the space and equipment to treat people adequately if a widespread case of the virus hits our community. We must do all we can to protect our church members and the citizens of Savannah, especially those who are over 60 and/or those with compromised immune systems. So  This is very difficult for us. We always want the doors of our church open—especially on Sundays. But as people of Christ, we are to take care of one another, and this is the best way to do that during this unique time.

Special Thanks:

Every Sunday at Asbury, there are people who work behind the scenes to help make the day meaningful and wonderful for all of us and our visitors. We thank those unsung heroes of faith—our hospitality team, ushers, greeters, connectors, nursery workers, and children's church teachers.

The Complete Service
  • Rev. Billy Hester greets the viewers online and welcomes the main Busy Bee, maker of the Asbury Memorial Clown Dolls.
  • During this time of crisis, it is important not to spread the disease—hugging and handshaking need to be replaced. Ray Ellis and Cheri Hester illustrate how to greet others without touching.
  • In his sermon, Rev. Billy Hester mentions with all the closings and cancellations, there are still many important acts that are not cancelled.
  • Ray Ellis ends the service with a version of "He's My Brother".

Alternative Ways to Greet One Another

Rev. Billy Hester and members of Asbury Memorial Church (Cheri Hester and Ray Ellis) have come up with clever ways to greet friends without shaking hands or giving hugs so as not to spread any germs or viruses, which is extremely beneficial during the time of the Coronavirus crisis.

The Breastplate of St. Patrick

Rev. Billy Hester of Asbury Memorial Church reminds us of the heart of St. Patrick and his devotion to Christ with the singing of the Breastplate of St. Patrick, his prayer of protection, to the tune of "Morning has Broken"
