The musical Man of La Mancha has music by Mitch Leigh, lyrics by Joe Darion, and a book by Dale Wasserman. Wasserman adapted it from his 1959 non-musical teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was inspired by and loosely based on Cervantes' novel, Don Quixote. The musical tells the story of the "mad" knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Don Quixote and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.
